I don’t give Lisette time to go off on one of her chatting tangents. “I had the most amazing night of my life,” I begin.

I’m guessing my intensity keeps her quiet with anticipation, because she doesn’t say a thing. “I think I met the one,” I announce. “…at least I hope so,” I add realizing that I am being very presumptuous; knowing that there’s no guarantee that he will ever even call me again.

“Lisette…I think I’m in love,” I say.

“It’s a miracle!” She finally says mocking me with her hands in the air as if in prayer.

“I’m serious Lisette,” I say.

“I know, but what did I tell you? I told you that you’d meet someone.”

“So what happened?” She asks.

“Well we were going to watch TV, but it blew up on us-” I begin.

“Get to the good part,” Lisette interrupts.

“Well…” I say, not able to keep a smile off my face. I raise my hands to indicate that she should imply the rest.

“No way!” She says with a huge smile on her face, catching on quickly.

“You didn’t…did you? You guys…woohooed?”

I nod slowly to emphasize my reply.

Suddenly I get very serious. “Lisette, do you think he’ll call?”

“Why wouldn’t he?”

“Well…I just met him, you know. It was sort of soon.”

“Was it good?” She asks as if that’ll make all the difference in the world.

“I don’t know,” I answer softly. “I mean, I know he was good…but I…I never…” I begin before trailing off embarrassed.

“What?” She asks; not quite picking up on what I’m trying to tell her.

“I…” I try again.

“You never what, Athena?”

“I’d never woohooed before,” I finally say.

Lisette doesn’t respond, but she doesn’t have to. I know she doesn’t mean to, but she stares at me as if I had four heads. I can’t blame her, here I am…a woman in my thirties who just woohooed for the first time.

“Oh my God Athena…you were a virgin?”

“Yes,” I answer softly.

“That’s beautiful,” she whispers as if I just told her something unreal. “So how was your first time?”

I’m too embarrassed to tell her out loud, so I lean in to whisper to her.

“I should have waited until I was in my thirties to woohoo for the first time,” she whispers back after hearing my description.

“That sounds absolutely incredible,” she says out loud as if in a dream-like trance. “Wow!” She adds to emphasize her point.

I’m suddenly not feeling too well. “I think I forgot to have breakfast. I’d better go,” I say.

“Talk to you later…that is if you’re not too…busy,” she says with a giggle as I walk toward the door.

If it’s possible to climax just from a memory, I believe that I have…several times this morning. I am literally weak in the knees; barely functioning.

The kitchen is a mess. I clean up the dishes and wipe down the counters mechanically, my mind still back in the bedroom.

I make it to the bathroom in a dreamlike state. A shiver runs down my spine as I think of Wendell’s hands touching, caressing, loving.

Even the least sexy thing I can do…clean up cat poop, doesn’t stop me from thinking of his body and my body joined. I can barely breathe.

Oh God! I say to myself. I have to get out of this house.

I remember that I never called Lisette back, but I’m sure she’ll understand that I was busy…oh so busy. I decide to pay her a visit.

Lisette lives in a very scenic part of Hidden Springs with a waterfall practically in her backyard.

I pull up to two small homes built on a single lot.

As I walk toward the house, her neighbor Bert Altos is standing near the walk way.

“Hello,” I say greeting him. “You must be Mr. Altos, Lisette has mentioned you. I’m Athena,” I say.

“Please call me Bert,” he offers.

“Do you know if Lisette is home?” I ask.

“I believe I saw her leave for work just a moment ago,” he says.

“Thank you,” I say turning away. My heart flutters in anticipation of telling Lisette about my glorious evening.

Rather than wait until she gets home, I decide to visit her at the Pet Shop.

I get out of another taxi and walk up to the store. “While I’m here, maybe I can buy Cupid a few things,” I think out loud.

It appears as if Lisette has just arrived. I’m glad that she’s here.

“Howdy stranger,” she greets me.

“Lisette, just wait until I tell you…” I begin.

“Wow,” he says when I pull away.

“Stay?” I half ask, half beg; placing a lot of meaning into the single word.

“Are you sure?” He asks, placing his arms around me.

Again I lean in and kiss him; never more sure about anything in my life. My mind is sure, my heart is sure, and the pulsing, tingling that I can feel down below is surest of all.

His kisses are hungry, yet controlled, whereas my virgin lips are wild and all over the place.

“Please,” I say pulling back, realizing that he has yet to confirm that he’s going to stay.

He looks down as if unsure whether we should take this next step and what it would mean. I stare at him, my eyes begging.

I kiss him again to help remove any doubts and hesitation. He responds with his whole body.

“Of course I’ll stay,” his mouth says confirming what his body already told me moments ago.

I try not to appear to be in too much of a hurry as I lead him to the bedroom. I feel that I’d pass out if we wait any longer.

We sit back on the bed. “What are you doing to me?” Wendell asks as if he’s afraid of jumping off a cliff.

I’m sure I know what he means. I too feel as if I’m crossing over into the land of no return; as if I’m free falling with no guarantee of safety at the bottom.

But I don’t care. I’ve waited all my life to feel love’s clutches at my heart. I’ve waited too long to feel a man hold me and caress me. I’ll take the chance if it means I get to feel love at least once in my life.

After the most amazing moments of my life, we emerge from the covers and lay there staring into each others eyes.

It’s not long before we’re both asleep.

In the night, my body is attracted to his warmth. I want it to consume me. I’ve spent far too many nights alone between cold sheets.

I move as close as I possibly can wishing I could melt into him. He feels so good.

He is the first up the next morning.

I can feel his presence as I sleep on. His energy fills the room; completing it.

In between dreams, I am aware of the shift of the bed as his weight sinks down onto it.

I’m somewhere between sleep and waking and can hear the pages of a book turning and his slow steady breathing next to me.

Suddenly I jump up, fully conscious. Was last night real? I ask myself.

“Good morning beautiful,” I hear him say.

Now I know that he’s really there, next to me, reading a book. It wasn’t just a dream.

I rise from the bed, last night coming back in a rush of feelings and memories.

Not knowing what it’s like to have a man in my bed, I’m not sure what to say. “Uh…are you hungry?” I asks, immediately feeling stupid and lame.

“I wish I could stay, but I have to leave for work,” he says putting the book away.

I wish you could stay too, I say to myself dreamily thinking about our night together.

“Talk to you later,” he says quickly dressing.

I sit back down on the bed as he leaves out the door. I’d give anything to have him undress and crawl back into bed with me, but I realize that he really does have to leave for work.

I lie back and watch him leave, praying that we didn’t move too fast and that I’ll see him again...soon.

“I’m sorry about that,” I say once the TV has blown out.

“I may be able to fix it for you,” Wendell offers.

“No, that thing is ancient. It wouldn’t even be worth your time.”

“Yeah, it does seem pretty old,” Wendell says in a teasing tone.

“Luckily I don’t watch much TV. I probably won’t even miss it.”

“So are you ready to eat?” I continue.

“Sure,” Wendell says.

“I have to warn you, my books aren’t paying much yet, so the meal may not be the greatest,” I say to prevent high expectations over my poor meal.

“That’s perfectly fine. Heck, teaching doesn’t exactly put lobster on the table either,” he says.

I move to get up and Wendell shuffles uncomfortably in his seat as if he’d like to say something that he doesn’t quite know how to say.

While he’s not looking, I place my hands over my chest in an attempt to steady my quick pulse. He looks so good and I want to kiss him so badly.

“So how’s the second book coming along?” Wendell asks initiating conversation to keep me company while I cook.

We chat while I cook and then continue the conversation while eating. “This is the best Goopy Surprise I’ve ever had,” Wendell says.

It’s my turn to chuckle. “You’re just being polite,” I say.

Cupid gets her share of the meal from a plate that I sat down on the floor for her so she wouldn’t feel left out.

“No, I wouldn’t just say that. This is pretty darn good,” Wendell insists waving his finger for emphasis.

“Why thank you,” I say while moving my seat back so I can get up and wash my dish. I’m still convinced that Wendell is just being nice.

Wendell is looking out the window. He looks so fine, that I never get around to actually cleaning the dishes.

I walk over to join him. He turns and again our eyes meet. There is no denying the attraction between us.

“It’s getting late,” he says.

“You can stay,” I suggest quickly; once again surprising myself by being so forward.

The statement doesn’t get the reaction I expected. Wendell bursts out in laughter.

I’m not quite sure what he’s laughing at, but his laughter is contagious and I join him.

“I’m sorry,” he says attempting to stop the laughter. “You are just so cute and innocent sometimes that it’s unbelievable.”

“I like it,” he says suddenly very serious.

“Well I meant what I said,” I say softly pushing past boundaries of boldness that I’d never crossed before.

“I would really like you to stay,” I whisper softly in his ear.

“I was hoping you’d say that…” he says in return; the tone of his voice indicating that there’s more.

“But you scare me,” he finishes.

“Scare you?” I say confused.

He pulls me close in a tight hug. I’m confused and he seems to be conflicted. I’m wondering if he’s married or something. I brace myself for bad news.

“Are you married?” I ask in a voice, barely audible, filled with fear.

“No,” he says reaching up to play with a lock of my hair.

“Then what is it?” I asks, preparing myself for something worse.

“It’s just…I’ve never liked anyone this much, so soon.” He begins.

I’m relieved and show it with a smile.

“I feel like I’m losing myself. You’re on my mind all day,” he continues.

“Me too,” I whisper.

“Really?” He asks as if he’s surprised. He looks deep into my eyes as if he’s looking for confirmation.

“Really?” He asks again when I don’t answer.

I decide to give him confirmation, but I’m feeling shy.

And then, contrary to anything I’ve ever done in my life, I make the first move and kiss him firmly on the lips.

Sims 3: Athena Sparks 27

The following days consists of me spending time with Cupid…

…and spending the better part of the day working on Transformed Girl. I happily receive my pay for submitting a couple of new chapters, but it’s not nearly enough to live on.

This fact is confirmed when I check the mailbox and see the box full of bills.

I reluctantly write checks to pay the bills, which leaves me with very little money to get by on. Maybe I shouldn’t have quit the bookstore, I say to myself.

While still standing by the mailbox, I make a couple of phone calls.

First, I call Wendell to invite him over for dinner. “I really want to make up for the other night,” I say referring to the night when I insulted him.

Wendell says that he’ll be right over and that he can’t wait to see me again.

Next I call up Lisette, just because I haven’t spoken to her in a while and because I am so happy about Wendell that I feel that I’d burst if I don’t talk to someone about him.

“Hey Athena…I thought you’d up and left Hidden Springs since I haven’t heard from you,” Lisette says as soon as she answers the phone.

Lisette then goes on chatting so much about her job at the pet shop and her neighbor that I can barely get a word in.

I patiently wait for a break in the conversation to tell her about Wendell.

I get my chance when Lisette finally stops to breathe. “Guess what…I met someone,” I announce.

“WHAT!! Why didn’t you tell me? What’s he like? What’s his name? What happened to Desmond?” Lisette shrieks in one breath.

“Uh…he’s pulling up now Lisette. I’ll have to call you back later,” I say, hearing her disappointed sigh.

“I want details!” she says.

“Okay…later,” I say hurrying to get off the phone when Wendell walks up.

Wendell approaches looking incredibly handsome.

I look down at my own outfit and wish that I had dressed up a little more.

“You look gorgeous,” he says picking up on my self consciousness.

“Thank you,” I answer staring at his lips wondering what they taste like.

“I rushed right over and forgot to ask if you needed me to bring anything. I could run to the store if you need me to,” Wendell says apologetically.

“That’s OK. I have everything I need,” I answer.

“You sure?” He asks once again.

“I’m more than sure,” I answer with more meaning than he’s probably aware of.

“Come on in,” I say before turning to lead him into the house.

Wendell hesitates and I can feel his eyes as they wonder all the way down to my butt.

As he watches, I try to add a little sex appeal to my walk while praying that I won’t trip.

Moments later, we are sitting in front of the TV, trying to decide what to watch.

I attempt to turn the channel when suddenly the TV blows out.

Sims 3: Athena Sparks 26

It’s slightly chilly as we exit the theatre. It’s getting late, but I’m not quite ready to say goodbye.

“Now that was a good movie,” Wendell says.

“Yeah, definitely,” I agree.

“Do you have to rush home?” He asks as if reading my mind.

“No,” I answer quicker than I intended.

“How about we grab a bite to eat?” Wendell suggests.

“Sure,” I say, again much too quick, although I have a feeling that he doesn’t mind or find it odd.

Wendell turns to lead the way and I’m all too happy to follow him.

The diner has quieted down for the night. I hope that Desmond and his friends have left. I’d rather not run into them.

We enter the diner and for once, I’m actually looking forward to sitting down and having a conversation with someone.

During dinner, Wendell explains a little more about his reasons for moving to Hidden Springs and they are very similar to my own. “I just needed a new start. I was tired of the same ole same ole, you know?” He says.

Once again, we’re outside trying to think of good excuses for not ending the evening. “I really enjoyed this,” I say to him. “I cannot believe how foolish I was last night.”

Wendell chuckles softly, “I can’t exactly blame you. I practically stalk you at the park, then act like a obsessed fan when I get a chance to speak to you.”

“I was actually flattered,” I admit. “You were the first person to show an interest in my writing.” I assure him.

I continue,” after you left, I did my own stalking. I looked you up online and ran across your blog. You’re a good writer by the way.”

Again he laughs, “No way…you didn’t read that did you?” He asks rhetorically. “Were you checking to see if I had a criminal record?”

Suddenly I feel embarrassed. “Uh,” I begin.

“Don’t worry about it. I don’t exactly carry myself like a school teacher. I teach grade school. I was just hired over at the elementary school.”

I never would have guessed, but its good to hear that he works with children. “I used to teach, but I was no good at it,” I say.

“I’m sure you’re good at everything you do,” he disagrees. “Well, I hate to say goodnight, but I have to get home and make sure my dog hasn’t destroyed the house.”

We say our goodbyes and are forced to part ways.

During the taxi ride home, I replay the evening in my mind and come to another conclusion about Wendell…I can easily picture myself falling in love with him.

Sims 3: Athena Sparks 25

I make it across the street without tripping myself up too bad, although I almost fall when I get close to Wendell.

“Hi,” I say quietly.

“You ok?” He asks, apparently noticing my little trip-up, which I hoped he didn’t see.

“No,” I answer although I know that he was asking about me almost falling. “I wanted…wait no…I had to apologize to you.”

“OK,” he says. I can see that he is not going to bail me out by saying anything else.

“Um…I was rude and being a jerk last night. I uh…I guess I became a little paranoid because I had you in my house when I didn’t even know you.”

“How about you get to know me before you judge me,” Wendell says.

“That’s what I’m trying to tell you…I’m sorry and I wish I had gotten to know you. But…I know it’s probably too late,” I say.

“It’s not too late,” he says, but I’m so afraid of him rejecting me that I almost don’t hear him.

“What?” I ask just to be sure that I did hear him.

“I said that it’s not too late. How about we get to know each other?” He says, this time with a smile on his face.

I smile, “I’d like that.”

“Good,” he says looking straight into my eyes. My gaze meets his.

I avert mine first, “So…are you busy now?” I ask hopefully.

“No, I was heading to the house of books, but if you have something else in mind…”

“I hear there’s a good movie out. Want to go see it?” I ask, surprised at myself for being so bold.

“The theater is my second home, I’ve probably already seen it-”

“Oh, that’s ok. Maybe another time,” I say not hiding my disappointment.

“You didn’t let me finish. I was going to say that seeing it with you would make it even better,” he says.

I’m flattered and not sure what to say.

This time he does bail me out. “Uh, we’d better go see what time the movie starts.”

“Yeah, OK,” I say.

“By the way…I’m glad you called,” Wendell says.

“Really?” I ask.

“I thought about calling you, but I didn’t want to freak you out or anything. I really wanted to see you again.”

I unconsciously smile at his words.

We walk down the street to the theater. “So ladies choice…what would you like to see?” Wendell asks once we’re standing by the box office.

“’Let the Right Sim In’ sounds like a good one”, I suggest checking out the poster.

“Sounds like a winner to me,” Wendell says before purchasing two tickets.

We enter the theater. Wendell buys popcorn and leads the way to the movie. We sit at the top and spend the 10 minutes before the movie starts talking about our all time favorite movies. We discover that we share similar tastes in movies.

We quiet down as the movie begins. Once or twice during the film, our hands touch. Each time I feel a tingle and find it slightly harder to breathe. I want to feel his touch again and again, but try to remain focused on the movie.

Sims 3: Athena Sparks 24

I decide to get over myself and give Cupid some well deserved quality time.

I run out the front door and she chases after me.

I run around the back of the house…

…and Cupid comes around the corner as fast as her little legs can carry her.

I finally stop and allow her to catch up with me.

It’s funny how clear your mind can be when you get out into the fresh air and get your heart pumping. In the midst of running around with Cupid, I get a strong feeling that now would be a great time to call Wendell.

After reading his blog last night, I looked him up in the white pages. He was the only ‘Harding’ listed, so it was easy to get his phone number.

I dial his number and he answers on the second ring. “Hello, Wendell speaking,” he says in a voice that lets me know that he has no idea who’s calling.

“Uh…hi. This is Athena…I was hoping that you’d give me a chance to apologize for last night,” I say trying to sound as apologetic as possible.

At first Wendell doesn’t respond and I think it’s a lost cause. Suddenly he responds,” I’m heading to the House of Books right now. See you there?” He says in a question tone.

“Yes,” I answer quickly and hang up the phone.

I’m determined to meet him there. I cannot blow the chance to make up with him.

My heart is pounding in the taxi. “Please God make him forgive me!” I beg.

Throwing all pride aside, as soon as the taxi stops, I jump out and break into a run toward the house of books. Please be there, please be there! I say to myself.

I enter the House of Books, but I don’t see him.

Little do I know, Wendell is still down the street trying to decide whether to meet with me or not.

After searching the House of Books and not seeing him, I decide to leave. Maybe he decided not to meet me after all, I say to myself.

Just as I’m walking out the door, I run into Desmond. My heart sort of skips a beat. He is still such a good looking man and I still find myself physically attracted to him.

I look past Desmond for a moment and see someone standing far off in the distance. Without my glasses, I can’t be sure, but I think it may be Wendell.

“Hey Athena!” Desmond says when he spots me. “How have you been?”

“I’ve been fine. How are you?” I ask.

“How is your book coming along?” Desmond asks.

He’s actually interested! I say to myself, thinking maybe Desmond and I may be able to build something after all. “Oh! It’s going well. I actually finished the first, now I’m working on my…”I stop because I can see in Desmond’s eyes that he was just asking to be polite.

“Uh…where were you heading?” I ask instead of continuing.

“Oh! I’m meeting some friends at the diner. We’re going to watch the game. Would you like to join us?” Desmond responds, finally showing some enthusiasm.

I’d rather poke my eyes out, I think to myself. “Uh…no, I have to be somewhere myself,” I answer.

“Well that’s too bad. I really enjoy spending time with you!”

I cannot tell weather he is being truthful or not. I can feel myself blush slightly, thinking to myself that maybe Desmond really does like me. “Really?” I ask.

“Uh…yeah. Can’t you tell?” He says with a smile.

I inhale. He is so fine, I think to myself.

Then I come to my senses because I know that we have absolutely nothing in common. “Well…I’d better go. Have fun at the diner,” I say.

Desmond says goodbye.

Now that he has moved closer, I can tell that the guy I saw in the distance is definitely Wendell. I rush over to see him, leaving Desmond behind.

Sims 3: Athena Sparks 23

After my bath, I play around with Cupid for a while to take my mind off of the mess I’ve made with Wendell.

I find it hard to believe that Cupid still won’t let me pet or hold her. Maybe I’m not spending enough time with her…I don’t know, but it sort of hurts my feelings. She likes when I play with her though.

The laser dot seems to be her favorite game.

Exhausted, I crawl up under my lonely cold sheets. If I keep turning men away the way I have with Wendell, I’m destined to sleep on cold sheets forever…not exactly comforting thoughts to have before falling asleep.

As if she’s read my mind, Cupid crawls up on the bed and falls asleep next to me. At least I have her to keep me company…if only she would allow me to touch her.

I awake the next morning feeling the lingering feeling of regret; greeting me like an old friend first thing in the morning.

For once I’d like to wake up feeling accomplished, instead of feeling like I’m responsible for ruining my own life.

Just to make myself feel even worse, I find myself in front of the mirror examining my newest wrinkles.

My mortality slaps me in the face; reminding me that I only have a certain amount of time left if I want to have that husband and child that I’ve been dreaming of for so long.

“What have you been doing with your life?” I ask myself out loud as I continue to search my face for new signs of aging.

My growling stomach puts an end to my ‘what’s the meaning of life’ internal dialogue. I take out the ingredients for waffles and begin preparation.

I place the waffles in the oven and right on cue, Wendell pops into my mind again.

I recall how conversation came so easy with him. It was almost like I was no longer the shy person that I’ve been all of my life. Then a question pops into to mind…

What if? What if I called him and apologized? Was my slip up that bad? Is it forgivable?

My series of questions come to a halt as the scent of burning waffles capture my attention.

I pull the unappetizing waffles out of the oven. There’s no way I’m going to be depressed and eat burnt waffles on the same day.

I place the waffles on the table. Why me God? I ask myself. Why do I just insist on messing everything up?

I prepare a bowl of cereal, because I don’t feel like attempting waffles again. At least you can’t mess cereal up.

After eating my not-so-great cereal, I throw the waffles in the sink.

I sit down at the computer to at least try and get some work done. My bank account has dwindled down to nothing. If I don’t finish this book soon, I won’t be able to pay my bills.

Cupid slinks over begging for a little attention.

She looks up at me softly purring. “Not now Cupid. If I don’t get these chapters completed soon, there will be no more catnip for you and we’ll both be on the streets,” I say not even looking away from my computer.

As if she understood, she walks away to occupy herself. I read back over what I’ve written so far. I’m not quite happy, but it’s the best I can do at the moment.

I submit the chapters to my agent and hope for the best.

I head to bathroom. As if I didn’t have enough expenses, my sink explodes all over me as I attempt to brush my teeth. Why me? I whisper to myself once again.

Sims 3: Athena Sparks 22

Wendell politely remains outside with Cupid while I begin preparing lunch.

I prepare a simple salad and Wendell finally comes in and joins me.

I’ve spent so many days imagining a man sitting across from me at my kitchen table, but somehow Wendell is not who I imagined.

Again, my eyes scan his tattoos wondering what’s the story behind them.

I retreat back into my internal dialogue, the total opposite of the person I was moments ago, chatting away in the park.

I don’t know why I’m suddenly uncomfortable around Wendell. Maybe it’s because I invited him over, although I know nothing about him. I try to think of something to talk about, so that I’m not being rude.

“So what do you do Wendell? Do you live here in Hidden Springs?”

He takes a bite of his salad before answering. I can detect some hesitation.

“I just moved here a few weeks ago. I’m currently between jobs…still trying to feel my way around the town.”

“Uh…what made you move here? Are you trying to escape from something?” I’m ashamed as soon as the words leave my mouth. I’m not immune to an occasional social faux pas.

“What are you implying? I haven’t escaped from anything. I just moved here because I like it here,” Wendell answers clearly aware that something has changed in my attitude toward him.

I’ve now made us both uncomfortable. I excuse myself from the table to wash my dish. As soon as I turn on the water, water begins bursting out of the faucet.

“Damn!” I swear.

“I can fix that for you,” Wendell says jumping up.

“No!” I say with more force than I intended. I don’t know why I’m being this way toward him. He’s the same person that I was just talking to in the park, but now I’ve allowed my paranoia to take control.

Again, I have offended him. “I’m sorry, I’ll just excuse myself,” he says, sounding slightly hurt.

Wendell begins walking out the door, and I know that I should stop him and apologize, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. Instead, I call up a repairman to come and fix my sink.

He leaves and I feel bad about it.

Stupid me, then goes to the computer and type his name into my search engine. If he’s a criminal, surely his name will come up.

The repair woman arrives while I’m still searching my computer for Wendell Harding.

The only thing that I come across is a blog that he has created where he writes book reviews.

I read a few of his posts and I’m instantly impressed. Not only does he appear to be well read, but he’s a good writer. His reviews are well written and nothing short of incredible.

My heart sinks, because I realize that I’ve messed up a potentially good friendship. Only it’s too late to do anything about it tonight. I pray that I get a chance to make it right.

I prepare a bubble bath; where I soak and attempt to shift through my thoughts.

Then it hits me like a ton of bricks…Wendell may be tattooed and mysterious, but he and I are perfectly compatible. That type of thing cannot be faked.

I’m sitting there in my new found spot and from the corner of my eye, I see someone approaching. My stomach does a flip, because for a moment there, I think it might be Desmond.

I put my book away in anticipation, but as he gets closer, I realize that it’s not Desmond. Who is this and why is he walking toward me?

The guy walks straight up to the bench I’m sitting on, and in a deep baritone voice asks, ”Do you mind?” Indicating that he’d like to sit down.

“No,” I say, although I do mind. I can’t understand why he chose this bench when there are plenty of empty benches in the park.

“Thanks,” he says before sitting.

I’m feeling nervous, because here I am in a near empty park with some strange guy.

He sits and I scan him with the corner of my eyes.

I am afraid for no reason. He has done nothing to threaten me.

I check out his arms. He has tattoos all up and down his arm. Could he be a gang member, a thief or an ex-con? I know I’m being biased, but like I said before, I have an over active imagination.

I take a chance and get a good look at him. He has a nice face. He’s actually quite handsome. There’s just the tattoos. I sit there afraid to stay, but also afraid to get up and leave in case that offends him in some way.

I take a chance and quickly stand, only he follows suit. “Uh…” he says as if he has something that he’d really like to say, but he is too nervous. I know that feeling well.

“Well, have a good day…” I say in a shaky nervous voice.

“Uh…I’m sorry, but you seem really familiar,” the guy says, effectively stopping me from leaving.

“Uh…my name is Wendell…Wendell Harding,” he says offering his hand for me to shake.

I hesitate, but figure there’s no harm in giving him my first name. “I’m…Athena,” I say.

“No way! I knew that I recognized you! You’re Athena Sparks. You wrote ‘Lonely Girl’!” Wendell says; his voice full of excitement over his discovery.

Now I’m no longer afraid. It’s funny what being recognized for your work will do to you. It makes you totally let down your guard. “You’ve read my book?”

“Of course! It’s incredible. I saw your picture on the dust cover. You’re even prettier in person!”

“But it’s only been recently released. How did you discover it so soon?” I ask.

“Oh, I’m an avid reader! If it’s out there, I try to make a point to read it.”

I’m impressed and intrigued. Who is this tattooed man who reads?

Wendell seems to disappear into his own world for a moment. “Oh man! I can’t believe it! I’ve actually met the actual author of a book I love!” He reminds me of a child who has gotten what he really wanted for Christmas. The only thing that’s missing is the jumping up and down.

I’m flattered. Someone actually read and enjoyed my book.

“I’m working on my second book now…part two of ‘Lonely Girl’.”

“Oh I can’t wait! It was amazing how well you captured Ebony’s internal struggle in the first book. I cannot wait to see how she figures it all out.”

To my surprise I find myself openly chatting now. “I always thought the book would fall more into the ‘chic lit’ category. I never thought that a man would actually enjoy it and get anything out of it.” I say wondering if Wendell might be homosexual.

He seems to pick up on my thoughts. “No, believe me…I’m not gay. ..not that there’s anything wrong with it. And you really did a great job of making your characters accessible to everyone. As a male, I could also relate to Ebony…and your male characters are so well thought out. A lot of female authors create these shallow dense males, but you really added a lot of depth to your characters.”

“Well, it’s good to have such great male feedback,” I say, then without thinking I add, “I might have to have you read the first few chapters of the next book.”

Wendell smiles. “I would be honored.”

“Who are some of your favorite authors,” I ask.

“Oh, I read such a variety of books that it’s hard for me to limit my favorites down to just a few. But I love anything by Jack Sims, Amanda Beasley, D.W. Craig and Carmen Weems.”

“I love Carmen Weems! She’s my absolute favorite. And that biography that she wrote about her brother…in-cre-di-ble!”

“Are you kidding me? Her absolute best book was her very first. It was pure and innocent. I couldn’t put it down.”

“Yeah, you got me on that one. I’ve reread it at least 3 times!”

Wendell laughs. “Now that you have me thinking about it, I may have to pull it out again when I get home.”

“Oh…there’s this other author. His name is at the tip of my tongue, but he is a must read.”

“Describe his work. I may know who you’re talking about.”

“He is really great at writing stories about his growing up. Dang… my favorite book by him was…what was it…’Archie’s’…something.”

“You’re talking about C.D. Burns. The book is ‘Archie’s Psalm’.”

“Oh God…yes! Wasn’t that one incredible!’

“That one hit really close to home. It reminded me of my own childhood,” Wendell reveals.

“I heard that he has other books out there that have not been officially released.”

“I heard that too. I read his story online and apparently he had an agent that tried to make him write gangster literature, so he fired her. That’s too bad too, because he’s such a great writer and I hate that thug literature that’s out.”

“Oh God yes! It’s like a bad rap video.”

Wendell laughs in total agreement.

“I thought it was just me,” he says when he’s finally able to stop laughing enough to speak.

“No, not just you,” I say.

“Oh man!” Wendell says, trying to calm himself after another burst of laughter. “Oh! It’s so rare to find great conversation,” Wendell says.

Great conversation? I think to myself. No one has ever said that I offered great conversation, yet here I am having a full blown discussion with a man I don’t even know.

Before I have time to think, I say the unexpected, “Um…I was about to head home for lunch. Would you like to join me?”

“Sure. I’d love too! I could never turn down an invitation from my new writing idol.”

As we walk to my house, I begin to regret inviting Wendell over. Just because we shared a good conversation, doesn’t mean that he is safe to be around. Writing idol, is what he called me. What if he’s a stalker?

Sims 3: Athena Sparks 20

I wake early the next morning and see Cupid still sitting on the dresser. She’s busy cleaning herself.

She takes some time to explore around the house.

Then comes in to try out her new scratching post.

I can see why lonely people like to have pets around. Cupid stays busy all morning. I walk into the bathroom and catch her playing around in the toilet.

I’d rather her not play around in the toilet, but she’s so cute that I can’t bear to scold her.

She jumps down from the toilet when she spots me.

She calmly stares at me, so I pullout the cat brush and gently brush her. Cupid expresses her thanks by purring softly.

I attempt to pick her up again, but she still resists my efforts.

I know that it’ll take time to build our rapport, but I’m slightly saddened because I fear that my new pet doesn’t like me.

There’s a beautiful park behind my home. I decide to take a walk to explore it a bit. I would love for Cupid to come along, but she refuses to leave with me.

I walk through the park, until I discover a cozy isolated spot that’s perfect for reading.

I walk over and sit.

This spot is perfect. I can hear the birds singing and I can hear the water in the pond rustling.

My copy of “Lonely Girl” arrived this morning. I crack it open and immerse myself into the world of the characters that I created.

Behind me, I am perfectly aware of Desmond’s house. As my mind drifts to him, I wonder if he ever thinks about me.

Maybe I’ll take Lisette’s advice and continue to hang out with him…at least as long as he wants me around. For now, I’m content with my book, the beautiful scenery and the perfect view of his house from my newly discovered favorite spot to read.

Sims 3: Athena Sparks 19

I assess my mood as I walk to town. I’m not exactly depressed, Lisette really did cheer me up, but I’m feeling unsettled…just not quite content.

Books have always been my remedy in the past, so I head to the House of Books. I walk up to a random shelf and what I see shocks me.

My book, Lonely Girl, is there on the shelf with my name in large print. My agent told me that my book had been released and that she would send me a copy, but I never expected to see it out where anybody could read it so soon.

I step outside and sit on a bench to read it. Let me tell you…there is nothing quite like reading your own work. It’s almost surreal, because half the time you cannot believe that you actually created something so good.

My mood is totally uplifted now. I may not have a man, but my career is off to a great start. I cannot help but smile at that.

I go home and write a quick email reply to my agent who tells me that my book is selling quite well and that my copy has been mailed and should get to me tomorrow.

I then visit the Hidden Springs animal shelter website to pick out a pet to help me get through the inevitable lonely times.

Immediately a cute adult cat catches my eye. The site describes her as independent, quiet and neat. I call up the shelter to have her delivered.

I’m pleased when the shelter informs me that my new cat will be delivered within hours.

I take a taxi to the grocery store to stock up on supplies. I fill the cat bowl and prepare for my new family member to be delivered; wondering to myself why I never thought of getting a pet before.

The pet social worker arrives soon after. I’m excited when I hear the car pull up.

The worker’s name is Ashley. She walks over and shakes my hand, thanking me for giving a home to a cat in need.

Near my bedroom door is the cutest sight I’ve seen in quite a while. I am already in love!

“What will you name her?” Ashley asks.

“Cupid,” I say immediately without having to think about it. “Her name is Cupid Sparks!”

Ashley leaves us to get acquainted and I walk over to Cupid who appears to be afraid. “Hey pretty kitty,” I say in a soft, calm voice.”

Cupid stands up and stares at me with what looks like a smile on her face. I take this as a good sign.

I attempt to pick her up so I could cuddle her, but she hisses at me ferociously. Maybe she’s shy, I say to myself.

I try a different approach. I gently place my hand out to allow her to sniff it.

Cupid cautiously walks over and sniffs. “I’m here to take care of you! I won’t hurt you,” I say calmly.

I award her with a treat, then leave her alone for a while to allow her to get to know her new environment.

Cupid still appears afraid, but quickly finds a safe spot on my dresser and curls up.

I find her asleep there when I enter the room to prepare for bed.

I try not to be too depressed when I wake up the next morning.

The fact that I burned my waffles to a crisp doesn’t exactly help my mood. I’m hungry, so I force myself to eat them.

After bathing and dressing, I’m feeling pretty down. I give Lisette a call.

Lisette is working, but invites me to come and visit her at her job. I step outside and see a site that cheers me up a bit.

I haven’t seen an ice cream truck since I was a child. The truck turns and pulls up in front of my house. Suddenly I’m feeling a little giddy.

I walk up to the truck and scan the menu.

I choose a strawberry flavored cone with candy sprinkles. It’s hard to be depressed when you’re licking ice cream.

With cone in hand, I cannot help but smile. Strawberry cones were always my favorite as a child.

I sigh as Desmond crosses my mind, but I’m determined to not let my sour mood destroy my appetite for my cone.

I quickly lick away at my creamy pink ice cream cone. It’s more delicious than I remember.

Afterward, I hail a taxi and head to town to visit Lisette.

Lisette works at a charming little pet shop just a little walk from the downtown area.

“Hey Athena! Come on back!” Lisette calls as soon as I enter the store. “How’s it going lady? You sounded so depressed when you called.”

Still not quite comfortable greeting her any other way, I grab her hand to shake it. “Things didn’t work out between Desmond and I,” I answer.

“What do you mean? Did something happen on your date? Was he rude? Did his breath stink? Don’t tell me he’s married!” Lisette says in one breath.

“No…nothing like that. We just don’t have anything in common.”

“Okaaaay?” Lisette says in a dragged out way.

I detail what I mean. “It’s just…things that are important to me, are not important to him and vice versa.”

“See… that’s why so many of us women are lonely!” Lisette says.

“Lisette, I know I’m getting older, but I’m not willing to settle.”

“Who said anything about settling? You don’t have to marry the guy, but what’s wrong with going out every once in a while and enjoying his company?”

“But-” I begin.

“Did you enjoy his company?” Lisette interrupts.

I think it over. “Well…yeah. I actually did enjoy it.”

“But- what do we talk about, if we can’t talk about things that are important to us?”

“You don’t strike me as a person that needs to always be talking,” Lisette begins. “Why not do things that don’t require talking?”

“Like what?” I ask showing my naiveté.

Then it dawns on me what she might mean. I lean over and whisper in her ear, “You mean woohoo?”

“Well…that’s nice too, but I meant going to movies and concerts.”

We both giggle like teens.

I glance around the pet store. “Maybe I should just get a pet and just live with the fact that I’ll be single for the rest of my life.”

Lisette smiles, but her tone is serious. “I’m with you on the pet part, but you will not be single for the rest of your life…I promise.” Right now, I am very grateful for our developing friendship and her faith, although I’m not convinced.

Lisette returns to her work and I decide to look around the pet store.

The first terrarium I walk up to contains a snake. I cringe. “People actually keep these things as pets…they make my skin crawl,” I call out to Lisette.

“Yep, I get requests for snakes at least once a week,” Lisette answers. “If you want a pet, try adopting one. They’re free and the animals desperately need homes,” she adds.

“Sounds good to me. Talk to you later!” I call out before saying goodbye and heading out the door.

Sims 3: Athena Sparks 17

It would be remiss of me to use words like nervous and panic to describe how I feel right now, walking out the door with Desmond by my side. Those words don’t even come close to telling you how I feel. In fact, I don’t know enough words. All I know is that I find it really hard to do the basic human things, like walk, breathe and think. I didn’t even try to talk.

Desmond holds my door open as I get in. This leaves me only a few seconds to try to regain control of myself before he enters on his side.

I know that it only takes about ten minutes to make it to the diner, but for me it felt like forever.

The ride is almost unbearable. I’m grateful that the taxi driver is very talkative because he keeps Desmond engaged in conversation, allowing me time to take in the moment, as I am feeling hyper aware at the moment. I am much too aware of Desmond’s body heat next to me. If his skin accidentally brushed against mine at this moment, I believe I would melt.

I swear that I can hear his heart beating…or maybe that’s my heart. Either way, the rhythmic pounding is deafening to my senses.

I trick my mind into believing that I am in the taxi alone. It’s the only thing that I can think to do to calm myself enough to stop acting like a love struck child.

I calm down enough to picture Desmond beside me once again. He and the taxi driver are still talking, but I have yet to tune into what they are saying.

We are moments away from the diner. Finally I feel like I can function properly.

Desmond steps out once the taxi stops. He walks over to my door to let me out. Normally, I would have opened the door and stepped out on my own, but I hesitate, because I have to make sure that my legs still have feeling. Once I can once again feel my legs, I step out and we make our way toward the diner.

Inside the diner, we sit face to face. “You were quiet during the taxi ride,” Desmond says in an observational sort of voice.

“Yeah, I’m sorry. I tend to get quiet at times,” I say.

Desmond smiles before grabbing his menu. “I’ve noticed,” he remarks.

I wonder if he thinks this is a bad thing. As if he has read my mind, he says, “Believe me…it’s a relief. There are too many people who talk all the time just to hear themselves.”

Once the first awkward few minutes have passed, I feel more comfortable and begin to chat a little more freely. Desmond, however, dominates the conversation with his talk of work, parties that he’s attended and places that he has traveled to. I get the impression that Desmond has a lot of friends.

It’s approaching noon as we finally walk out of the diner. “Thanks for the coffee and breakfast,” I say as we stand outside.

“No problem. Any excuse to eat is a good one. Maybe we can do this again sometime?”

“Uh, yeah! That sounds good,” I answer.

“Eunice is throwing a party once her renovations are completed. I’d love for you to come with me.”

I hate turning Desmond down, when it’s another chance to get to know him, but I cannot imagine myself being at Eunice’s house with a ton of other people that I don’t know. “Uh…I’ll get back to you on that.”

“OK. I’ll call you up with the details once I know. Maybe you could pencil it in.”

“Yeah, OK.” I say ready to change the subject. “So Desmond, you never told me what you do.”

“You mean my job? Right now I work at the hospital, but I think it may be time for a change. I’m actually in the market for a career change.”

I wait for Desmond to ask what I do, but he doesn’t, so I volunteer the information. “Yes, I know what you mean. I used to be a teacher, but now I’m pursuing a writing career.”

“Really? So you’re a journalist?” Desmond asks.

“No. I finished my first novel and starting work on my second.”

“Ah! Now that’s interesting. I can’t remember the last time I read a book, so I couldn’t imagine writing one.”

Desmond changes the subject. “So how are you enjoying Hidden Springs so far?”

I’m disappointed that Desmond is not very interested in my book. Even more disappointing is the fact that he doesn’t read.

“Well…what can I say…” I begin, trying to think of what I should add.

“It’s beautiful and the people here are nice,” I say, running our conversation through my head; realizing that we really don’t have much in common.

“I agree,” he answers. “Well Athena, it was great having breakfast with you. I’ll call you about the party.”

“OK,” I say. “Uh, thanks again.”

Minutes later, I’m back at home. Desmond and I didn’t share a taxi on the way back. He said that he had to grab a few things at the grocery store. I enter the house and walk straight to the computer.

The tone of my writing at this moment is slightly melancholy. I realized on the ride home alone that Desmond and I are not very compatible; that I may actually be forced to live the rest of my life alone.

Sims 3: Athena Sparks 16

I would say that the unexpected happened this morning, but somehow that word just doesn’t fit. It ‘s actually a miracle.

Just as I am making my bed, the phone rings. I don’t even bother checking the caller ID. I just assume that it’s Lisette, but instead I hear a very deep voice, “Can I speak to Athena?”

“Uh,” I say, before I recover from my surprise enough to answer,” Yes, this is Athena.”

“Good morning. This is Desmond,” the voice says.

Now, I pride myself on being a fairly intelligent person, but at this moment my mind either panics or just blanks out on me, because suddenly my brain cannot form any words.

“Uh, Athena…did I catch you at a bad time?”

At this point my mouth opens, which is usually what happens when a person is getting ready to speak, but in my case, that is all that happens. My mouth opens but no words come out.

“Hello? Are you there?” Desmond says his voice sounding flustered as he suspects that his phone has cut out on him.

Finally my mind and mouth begin to cooperate. “Yes…uh…sorry about that.”

“Hey, I was wondering if you’d like to cash in on that rain check…you know, you said you’d take a rain check on coming by for coffee.”

I agree to meet Desmond at his house in a half hour. I make my way to the bathroom to quickly bathe and dress; while my mind is still numb from shock and not able to register that I should be nervous right now.

I finish my bath and immediately go into panic mode. OH God! I don’t know what to say to Desmond. I grab my cell phone and call the chattiest person that I know for advise.

Lisette answers the phone on the second ring. “Lisette! I need your help!”

“What! What’s wrong?” She asks in a voice that let’s me know that I’ve scared her. It also gives me some insight on how panicked my own voice probably sounds.

“It’s nothing bad. Do you remember I mentioned my neighbor Desmond the other day?”

“Yes, the one you said had the dreamy eyes and smile to die for,” Lisette answers sounding very interested. I can picture her sitting at the edge of her seat.

“Well he asked me over for coffee,” I say in a squeak of a voice.

“Uh…that’s good…right?” Lisette asks confused by my tone.

“Yes!” I say with extra enthusiasm. “But…I have no idea what to say to him!”

After laughing at my silliness, Lisette coaches me through a few good conversation starters. I hang up the phone feeling confident and ready…

…that is, until I walk out the door.

And with each step, my confidence dwindles and my steps become awkward and clumsy.

As I cross the road in front of his house, I feel as if I’m going to hyperventilate. You would think I was walking a ‘green mile ‘ to face an executioner.

I attempt to calm myself by telling myself that I have nothing to be anxious about. Desmond invited me over. Obviously, he wants to see me.

I ring the doorbell, and Desmond opens the door quickly, as if he was standing right by it the whole time.

My stomach does a flip. I place my hands there to calm it.

I try to be discreet, but when I look up, I see that Desmond has noticed me holding my stomach.

He grabs my hand to shake it. “You OK?” he asks with a smile on his face.

I inhale quietly. I use this breath as a breath of confidence. “Of course,” I say. “I just realized that I forgot to eat breakfast.”

“Maybe we can do something about that,” Desmond says, before asking me to enter the house.

Eunice, the lady I met the last time I was here is sitting on the couch. She nods her head in acknowledgment and continues watching her TV program.

Odd, I think to myself. Why would he invite me over if he already has company? Now I’m uncomfortable.

“I’m so glad that you could come by!” Desmond says.

“is this a bad time?” I ask.

“No, why would you…Oh…Eunice’s house is undergoing renovation, so she’s staying here for a few days.”

“Oh,” I say, not sure that my voice sounds very convincing.

Desmond reacts to my tone of voice. “I guess it is sort of odd to invite you over when I have a guest. I’m sorry. It’s just that I was so anxious to see you again.”

“Really? Why?” I ask, although it’s sort of an unusual question to ask at this moment. I’m sure Lisette would know not to ask such a question.

“It’s just…our other meetings have been so awkward…” he begins.

Damn! He noticed, I think to myself.

“I just wanted a chance to make it up to you.” He continues.

I’m not sure how to respond, so I allow him to keep talking.

“Now, you say you didn’t have breakfast and I owe you a cup of coffee. Would you like to go to the diner?”

I think about it a minute. I don’t want to ask, but I hope that he doesn’t plan on inviting Eunice. I consider saying no just in case he does plan on bringing her along.

“Sure!” I answer instead.

“Eunice, I’m heading to the diner,” Desmond begins. I can feel the disappointment creeping in because I know that he’s going to ask her to come. Instead, he says,” I’ll be back shortly.” I let out a breath of relief.

Happy New Year!

I had full intentions on doing a New Year’s photo shoot with some of my Sims as well as post new story updates and pics, but hubby treated me to a “alone time”, spa treatment day…so I’ve been away all day.

Instead, I give you a preview of an upcoming update to the Hamilton/Boyd of Bridgeport story. This is Destiny Hamilton and Tom Wordy in his music video where Destiny plays a “futuristic” model. I look forward to posting the story update and the rest of the pics sometime in the New Year!

Sims 3: Athena Sparks 15

To get to the public pools, we have to travel to a part of Hidden Springs that I’ve never seen. As the taxi passes a creepy old cemetery, I cringe. I’ve always had a strong aversion to cemeteries.

I advert my eyes to avoid looking at the cemetery.

Just as we pass the cemetery, we pass a creepy old man walking just outside the cemetery fencing. He has a strange green tone to his skin and I immediately think zombie.

Again I avert my eyes. Once again allowing my wild imagination to get away from me. I know that it’s just an old man with a cane, still…I don’t dare look back as we pass.

We continue driving along, passing a gorgeous view of Hidden Springs.

We finally pull up to the pools, where the taxi pulls over and drops me off.

Lisette is there waiting for me. Yes…I chickened out and called Lisette. I was tempted to call Desmond but felt it would be pretty presumptuous of me to invite him out somewhere where we would both spend the day half naked. Maybe it would have led him to believe that I was confident and bold. Then again, maybe not.

Right away, I thank Lisette once again for giving me the computer.

“No problem,” she says. “It’s so old, I’m sure you’ll be begging me to take it back soon.”

“Actually, the computer is perfect. I was able to finish my first novel because of you.”

“Well…there you go! I guess anything can be useful if it’s really needed,” Lisette says sounding thrilled that she was able to help me out.

“Not only that, but I started the outline for my next book.”

“Well, I can’t wait to read them!” Lisette says excitedly.

“So, are you ready to head to the pools?” I ask, knowing that if I allow her to get started, Lisette would be perfectly content standing right here talking the whole day away.

I could not think of a more lovely location to spend the afternoon swimming. The view here is amazing.

I slip into my swimwear and dip my foot into the water. It’s colder than expected, but I know just the remedy for adjusting to cold pool water…

…I just jump right in.

I don’t know if it’s just the gorgeous surroundings, but being in the pool feels extra relaxing; particularly the weightlessness that I feel as I float in the water.

I become so engrossed into my own thoughts, that I almost forget about Lisette. How rude of me to invite her to join me, then completely ignore her, I think to myself.

I climb out of the pool to go and join her.

I walk up the stairs and jump into the other pool. Immediately, Lisette and I begin acting like children.

We cannot resist a holding our breath contest. We allow our bodies to sink down into the pool to see who can hold their breath the longest.

We stay down; each of us determined to beat the other.

I begin cheering as I see Lisette about to give up.

She swims quickly to the top while I remain under just a little while longer to seal my victory.

Finally I allow my body to float up to the top. Just as my head emerges from the water, I take a deep breathe as my lungs threaten to burst from lack of oxygen.

We spend the rest of the time floating and chatting, until Lisette says that it’s time for her to head home.

She climbs out the water and goose bumps cover her dripping wet skin.

I follow behind, ready to head home myself.

As I dress and start toward my taxi, Desmond crosses my mind. I’m glad that I went with the safe choice this time, but next time I know that I’d better choose Desmond if I want to have any chance at capturing his heart.
