Zawadi wakes the next morning feeling anxious.
She dresses and eats quickly before hurrying out to the school bus.
Today is her first day of high school.
The high school students attend school on the top floor of her old school. The grade school students were never allowed to venture up to the top floor, but today is the first day that Zawadi gets to see where the big kids attend school.
The school day seems to fly. Before she knows it, school is over for the day. She walks out for a breath of fresh air…
…before reentering the school. Now that she is in high school, she’s eligible to join the art club where she can spend her late afternoons creating.
A few hours later, Zawadi leaves art club with the beginnings of a new masterpiece. Based on art club alone, Zawadi is sure to like high school.
Zawadi hops on her bike and heads home. She cannot wait until her family purchases a car, because her dad promised to teach her how to drive. Once she learns to drive, maybe a new car of her own will follow.
She arrives home and decides to get a head start on her homework.
So far, her assignment is pretty easy. She has to write an essay about her transition from grade school to high school.
Miles walks into Zawadi’s bedroom. She is happy that he is home.
“Hey pretty girl. How was high school?”
Zawadi answers without looking up from her homework, “Good…I joined the art club.”
“Very good,” Miles answers. After a few minutes of silence he continues, “Well, I have to go to work. See you later.”
Miles’ carpool arrives. He changes into his work clothes and leaves the room. “Bye daddy,” Zawadi says just before he is out of earshot.
Zawadi works hard on her essay; erasing and restarting several times. She wants to word her essay just right and leave a good impression on her teacher.
Sephora is outside working on a new statue that she hopes will bring in a lot of money for the family. Although she hates the use of energy burning vehicles, she knows that Miles has been wanting to purchase a car for a while now. She would love to make enough money to help him get one.
With Sephora working late into the evening on her newest statue, Zawadi becomes bored.
While examining the video camera given to her by her father, she notices a video tape in it. She decides to play it to see what is on it. The first thing she sees is their living room. She can hear what sounds like a party in the background.
The camera then pans to her standing in the kitchen next to her birthday cake. Her father recorded her blowing out her candles at her birthday party.
Zawadi is touched that her father recorded her party. She cannot believe that she had ever doubted his love for her.
The video ends, but Zawadi continues watching TV.
She sits down at the table eating left-overs, realizing that she is blessed to be loved by two great parents.
