Zawadi sits in the limo
still feeling angry at her mother.
Even
as a little girl, Zawadi realized that her
mother had a few issues. As a teen, she discovered that her mother’s issues
were mental health related. Still, she just cannot believe that her mother
would allow her issues to get in the way of being there for her at this moment.
The
limo driver starts the car and pulls off.
Zawadi wants to be excited
about the prom, but she’s having a hard time shaking the anger. Mitchell, oblivious to Zawadi’s bad mood, is feeling
shy and elects to sits a few seats down from Zawadi.
He
racks his brain for something to say, feeling awkward about just sitting there
and not talking to her.
Zawadi doesn’t mind the
quiet, because she’s using all of her strength to hold back the tears that
threaten to flow out of her eyes.
The
limo pulls up in front of the school. Zawadi wipes away a few
escaped tears before Mitchell notices them.
Zawadi rushes out of the
limo. Mitchell hesitates after he steps out.
He has a few things that he’d like to tell Zawadi, but he’s still
feeling shy.
Zawadi hurries toward the
school and he follows.
As
they approach the entrance to the school, Mitchell realizes that it’s now or
never. If he doesn’t get something off
his chest now, he may not get the chance.
“Um…Zawadi,” he says, stopping
her before she walks into the school.
Zawadi stops and turns
toward him.
“Uh…you look pretty,” Mitchell says.
These few words effectively melts away Zawadi’s anger, like ice in a steam bath, and replaces it with a warm feeling that she’s never felt before. “Thank you,” she whispers shyly.
Meanwhile,
at the house, Miles and Robert Owens wrap up their conversation; agreeing to
get together for dinner sometime soon.
Mr.
Owns leaves for home and Miles stands in the same spot thinking about how
quickly his little girl is becoming a woman.
However, from talking to Mr. Owens about Mitchell and the rest of his
family, he feels confident that she has actually picked a nice guy as her first
date.
He reenters the house to get ready for work.
Zawadi and Mitchell enter
the school and walk toward the gym. To Zawadi’s surprise, Mitchell
grabs her hand just before they enter. A
surge of new feelings moves up Zawadi’s arm and spreads throughout her entire body. Is this what love feels like? She asks herself.
As
the night moves along, Zawadi forgets all about
being angry with her mother and concentrates on being so close to
Mitchell. Mitchell is attentive to her
through-out the night. Zawadi’s friends “oh” and
“aw” over the fact that she and Mitchell would make a cute couple. If only, Zawadi says to herself,
wishing that she could call Mitchell her boyfriend.
The
night goes on. The prom MC finally
announces that it’s time to vote for prom king and queen. Excited, Zawadi and Mitchell approach as many students as possible,
begging for their vote to make her prom queen.
Little does she know, she has become quite popular among her fellow
students due to her father’s rise in the music industry. “That’s Miles Ward’s
daughter!” they whisper among themselves as they cast their votes.
Not
only does Zawadi win prom queen, but
after she receives her crown and steps down from the stage, Mitchell pulls her
aside and asks her to be his girl. She
says “yes” with tears in her eyes. Just
as she thinks that it just could not get any better than that, they share their
first kiss.
Exhausted
from a magically nights of firsts, including a first kiss…Zawadi leaves the gym.
With
her father at work, and her mother missing in action, she’s forced to say
goodbye to Mitchell and take a taxi home.
As
she waits for the taxi, she realizes just how tired she is. She cannot wait to lie down in her bed and
replay her kiss with Mitchell over and over in her dreams.
