Annie runs back up and joins her mom and Zach as they enter
the house.
Zach walks up to Ethan as if he owns the place. “Did you know that I’m your uncle and I can
tell you what to do?” He says; his voice filled with youthful
authority.
“But you’re just a kid,” Ethan says laughing it off.
“It’s nice to meet you though,” Ethan continues, shaking
Zach’s hand.
“I can still tell you what to do,” Zach insists.
“Glad you came Amy.
It’s good to see you,” Lexus says.
“Well I won’t be able to stay long. Can you watch my kids for a while?” Amy asks.
Lexus finds this a bit odd. “Sure, but how long are we talking?”
“You can send them home after a few hours.”
“Will you be there? I’d hate to send them home and you’re not there.” Lexus asks uneasy with Amy’s nonchalant attitude about the kids.
“Don’t worry about it.
They’re big enough to take care of themselves. They do it all the time.”
Amy may be OK with it, but Lexus isn’t.
Meanwhile, Ethan greets Annie, who doesn’t insist on telling
him who’s boss. “Do I have to call you
Aunt Annie?” He asks.
“No,” she whispers quietly. He can already see himself getting along with her.
After all these years, Terrance still finds it difficult to
be around his mother, who was never
much of a mother. Terrance often found
himself raising her, instead of the other way around.
Ethan leads his aunt and uncle out back to his sandbox. They all settle in different areas doing
their own thing. Ethan just appreciates
the company.
“A sandstorm destroys the town!” Zach cries out pouring
handfuls of sand on top of his so-called sand
castle.
“My town is being destroyed by an evil sand worm,” Ethan says digging his hand into the sand. Annie remains quiet.
Amy finally leaves as she said she would. Lexus sits with Joshua to begin teaching him
to speak.
Terrance, actually glad that his mother has left, puts some
time into his cookbook. He has a cookie
recipe that he is trying to perfect.
The children are content outside. Zach and Annie don’t even know that their
mother has left. They are used to her
slipping in and out at all times of the day and night.
Terrance finishes typing up his cookie recipe and decides to
test it out. There’s no better time,
than when there’s a house full of kids to test out a dessert. Kids are the best critics.
Annie and Zach begin to get bored with the sandbox. “I’m hungry!” Zach complains.
“Do you want to come up to my room and play?” Ethan asks.
Zach looks back at him with a disinterested
expression.
“I have a lot of toys or we can go up to the attic and play darts,” Ethan suggests.
“I…want…food,” Zach says slowly to emphasize each word as if
Ethan cannot understand.
Annie, being the most observant of the three children can
smell the cookies from outside. While
Ethan and Zach are still talking, she goes back into the house and grabs a
cookie.
Terrance is already at the table eating. Annie shyly sits down to join him; finding it
strange to have a big brother that is so much older than she is.
Lexus heads out back to let the boys know about the cookies,
while Annie and Terrance sit quietly with their freshly baked snack.
Ethan and Zach rush in to grab a plate.
“Now this is what I’m talking about!” Zach says happily as
the boys join Terrance and Annie at the table.
Terrance stands and picks up his empty plate. “What did you think about the cookie
Annie?” He asks.
“Good,” she answers quietly.
“What else is there to do here?” Zach asks in a demanding tone. “Do you have any video
games?”
“No, but we can watch TV,” Ethan suggests.
Zach insists that he doesn’t want to watch any baby shows,
so Terrance lets him play on the computer in the library, while Ethan and Annie
sit down to watch cartoons.
Out of the two of them, Ethan likes quiet, soft spoken Annie
the best. “Can you come over and play
again?” Ethan asks her.
“Uh huh,” she answers.
Terrance calls his mom and insists that she returns to pick
up Zach and Annie. It’s dark outside and
there’s no way he was sending them home on their own.
She reluctantly agrees, but refuses to come back in the
house. She parks by the curb and blows
her horn when she arrives. Annie comes
out first, not exactly happy to be going home.
Zach however, knows that he can do what he wants to at home
and is more than glad to leave his brother’s house.
