Lexus gets home, but she just can’t get her mind off of her father. She thought that they were on their way to developing a relationship, but once again he is missing in action.
Lexus knows that he probably won’t answer his phone, but she just has to give it a try anyway. She calls Kamal up.
This time Kamal answers the phone but tells her that he is on his way out the door and promises that he’ll call her once he reaches his destination. Deep down Lexus knows that this is a lie, but she holds on to a tiny bit of hope.
Lexus kills time by cleaning up a few dishes left over from breakfast.
When her stomach begins growling, Lexus grabs some left-overs out of the fridge.
Once again, she is eating alone, still longing for a relationship with her real father. When will the heartache and disappointment end for her?
Notzo finishes speaking at the school and heads home.
Lexus knows that she needs to buckle down and get her late homework done, but she’s finding everything to be a distraction.
First, it’s the loud dishwasher…
…then it’s the dishwasher in combination with the fact that her father Kamal has not returned her call yet…
…finally she’s distracted by Notzo returning home.
Notzo notices Lexus’ distress. He asks her what subject she’s working on. Lexus is irritated by his presence, but she answers, “biology.”
“I know a little about biology if you ever need help,” Notzo offers.
“I can handle it,” she answers not hiding her irritation. “I should have run away,” she whispers just low enough that Notzo cannot hear it.
Lexus knows that she doesn’t mean it. She also knows that she is being unfair to Notzo with her misdirected anger. She’s just a bit sleep deprived and stressed.
Notzo hears Taye crying and goes up to tend to him.
Notzo has no idea why Taye is crying, but he does not want to wake Mercedes, so he just has to figure it out himself.
Lexus really would like to go to bed, but she also hears Taye crying. This makes her even more agitated.
Notzo picks Taye up to check his diaper and to see if he is hungry.
Lexus is downstairs annoyed that once again she has to clean up after Notzo. What a slob!
Notzo is very tired, but he takes some time to play with Taye. The extra attention seems to work. Notzo places Taye back in the crib and he and Lexus finally get to bed for much needed sleep.
Mercedes, finally well-rested, gets up in the middle of the night - inspired to come up with new fashion designs.
Not much is accomplished, before she can hear baby Taye whining upstairs.
By the time Mercedes makes it upstairs, Taye is crying loudly and once again Lexus’ sleep is disturbed.
In her sleep induced confusion, Lexus checks her watch to see the time, but realizes that she doesn’t own one.
Lexus yawns, extremely unhappy to be up in the middle of the night once again.
“Mom, I can’t have that baby waking me up all hours of the night!” Lexus complains.
She goes on, “I’m not getting enough sleep! Can’t you move his crib into your room?”
“We’re all losing sleep,” Mercedes answers unhappy with Lexus’ selfish attitude. “You know, Lexus, sometimes you have to sacrifice your own comfort for your family. This is your brother, not ‘that baby.’”
Lexus continues to complain and pout like a child. “You have a lot of growing up to do. I know that you’re really angry at your father, but you need to direct that angry towards him…not us!” Mercedes says as she leaves the room with Taye.
Mercedes has had it with Lexus’ behavior and scowls as she leaves the room.
Lexus knows that her mother is right. Her father Kamal is still causing her pain and anguish and she is taking it out on the rest of the family.
Lexus climbs back in bed with her father on her mind. ‘Why doesn’t he want me around?” She asks herself.
Mercedes is very angry at Lexus’ father Kamal. She does not understand why he continues to hurt Lexus. Mercedes decides to meet with him to give him a piece of her mind.
Lexus is thinking the same thing as she lays down to get some sleep. Tomorrow she will go to the firehouse to confront her father once and for all.
Lexus falls asleep, but her sleep is not peaceful.
Her dreams are plagued by all of her fears, especially the possibility of her failing biology and not realizing her dream of becoming a doctor.
