Sephora wakes up the next morning feeling awful. She jumps straight out of bed and runs to the bathroom sick to her stomach.
Breathing the fresh air outside while gardening makes her feel a bit better.
Suddenly, Sephora is hungrier than she’s ever felt before. For some reason, she wants mac & cheese really bad, so she makes some from scratch – organic of course!
Sephora attempts to cook mac & cheese for the first time…
…and she burns it! She is too hungry to care and she definitely doesn’t want to waste food.
Miles has a terrific day at work. As promised by Juan, he gets promoted to stage hand. The Wards bank account is finally looking a bit better. Maybe he was wrong about Juan.
Miles gets home as fast as he can to tell Sephora the news of his promotion and nice bonus.
Sephora is happy for him as always, but all she can manage is a thumbs up. She’s too tired to give much more enthusiasm than that.
Miles doesn’t notice Sephora’s unusual fatigue. His career is finally moving in the right direction and he’s making friends at work that may be able to help push his career along even more.
Miles calls up one of his buddies at work and gives them the news of his promotion.
He’s so fired up that he doesn’t even notice his supernatural late night visitor.
Miles gets off the phone and does a little victory dance.
Miles can feel that their financial troubles are just about over. Happy days are here again…or so he thinks.
Miles enters the bedroom and sees Sephora relaxing. He joins her and tells her how he can foresee a lot of money coming their way soon.
Sephora’s mind is really on something else, but she gives Miles as much attention as she can manage. He’s still clueless to Sephora’s change in mood.
Sephora wakes up in the middle of the night and rubs her tummy. She has a good idea of what has been making her sick, tired & hungry all day.
The only problem is that Miles absolutely hates the idea of having children…ever. Sephora wants to be happy that she might be expecting, but is terrified of how Miles may react.
The reality of having to inform Miles that she may be pregnant hits Sephora like a ton of bricks in the morning. She has another one of her neurotic spells and freaks out at the idea of having to talk to Miles.
Sephora cannot help but feel a bit of scorn towards Miles for making her so anxious about her news.
Sephora sits on the couch, waiting for Miles to get out of the shower. “How could I have allowed myself to get pregnant?” She asks herself in disgust. “How am I going to tell him?”
“Babe, you know I love you…”She begins. Miles gets nervous, because he knows that he usually doesn’t like what comes after those words.
“I uh…I have news,” Sephora continues.
“Uh…Miles,” She desperately searches her mind for the words that she needs.
“Um, I think…I think I may be pregnant.” Sephora says with forced excitement. Silence. Miles does not react and time seems to slow.
Sephora does not like the pained look on Miles’ face. No woman wants to see that look on her husband’s face after she tells him that she may be pregnant.
Miles just stares at Sephora. He thought that he had made it real clear that he does not want children…heck that he doesn’t even like children.
Miles looks away, trying to hide the negativity that he is feeling.
“Miles I –”she begins but her voice fades because she notices the contempt in his face.
When you’ve been involved with someone long enough, you can tell how they feel by their body language. Sephora knows how Miles is feeling about what may be growing inside of her.
“Look at me!” Sephora demands.
Miles looks at her, but avoids her eyes. “What does she want me to say?” He asks himself silently.
Miles know that he has hurt her more than he has ever hurt anyone. He tries to hold her hands to make her understand, but she does not want him to touch her. “No, just…no,” she says in repulsion.
Miles can see the pain in her eyes slowly transform to anger...to more than anger, more like intense infuriation.
He braces himself for what he knows is coming next.
“I just told you that I am having your child and you look at me like you’re disgusted with me! I did not get pregnant by myself!”
“The sight of you makes me sick right now!” Sephora screams.
“Only something less than a man can make a woman feel the way you just made me feel!”
“I am not going to be made to feel like dirt on the ground in my own house!”
“We are going to have this child, so you’d better man up and get used to the idea real quick, cause this baby is coming whether you like it or not!”
The couple faces each other as if in a standoff, each standing in a mirror image of the other.
Sephora’s questioning of Miles’ manhood does not sit well with him.
His whole body is tense; his hands drawn up in defensive fists.
His mouth taunt with what appears to be anger, but is actually shamed defiance. What would his mother say if she knew that he just treated a woman the way he just treated his wife? But how dare she talk to him that way?
Five-thousand questions seem to go through Sephora’s mind at once. At the top of the list is, “How are we going to move past this?”
Sephora walks away with a false smile that just serves to hide her fears. If they can’t cross this bump in the road, their marriage may be over before it’s really begun.
Miles has the same thoughts as he remains in the same position.
He finally turns and leaves the house.
